The Test! (Abraham and Isaac)
The Superbook-Inspired Lesson
Welcome back to the team! Just like last time, take a deep breath—you are going to do great. You don’t need a theology degree to teach kids about God. Your most important job is simply to love these students and point them to Jesus. This guide is designed specifically for you. It gives you the exact words to say, breaks down the tricky concepts, and provides step-by-step instructions for every activity. You will also find a "Key-Terms" glossary at the very end of this document to help you understand the deeper theology before you step into the classroom.
Before you begin, make sure to watch the video. It will help you know ahead of time what the kids will watch so that you can start preparing with the discussion questions, games, crafts, and more.
"The story of Abraham and Isaac is one of the most beautiful pictures of Jesus in the entire Old Testament. God asked Abraham to sacrifice his 'only son, whom he dearly loved'. Isaac even carried the heavy wood for the sacrifice up the hill on his own back. Does that sound familiar?
At the last second, God stopped Abraham and provided a ram in the bushes to take Isaac's place. The ram was a substitute.
Thousands of years later, God the Father would watch His own 'only Son, whom He dearly loved'—Jesus—carry heavy wood (the cross) up a hill in Jerusalem. But this time, nobody stopped it. Jesus became our ultimate substitute! He took the punishment for our sins so that we could be safe and totally forgiven, just like Isaac was saved by the ram!"
As a youth leader, you might encounter some big theological words when reading study Bibles or preparing for this story. You don't need to use these big words with the kids, but here is the complex theology broken down simply so you feel 100% confident in what you are teaching!

Teacher Script (3-Minute Intro): "Welcome, everyone! I have a question for you: What is your absolute most prized possession? The one toy or game that you begged and begged your parents to get for you? How would you feel if you finally got it, but then realized someone else needed it more than you did?
In today's Superbook adventure, Chris gets exactly what he has been wishing for: the ultimate, sold-out Holo-9 virtual reality gaming helmet! He is so excited. But soon, he finds out that there is a really sick boy in the hospital who is wishing for that exact same toy to cheer him up. Chris struggles with the idea of giving up his greatest treasure.
Before Chris makes his choice, Superbook whisks him, Joy, and Gizmo back in time to meet a man named Abraham. Abraham had waited almost 100 years for God to give him a son, Isaac. But suddenly, God asks Abraham to do the unthinkable—to sacrifice his beloved son on a mountain! Let's watch and see what happens when Abraham's faith is put to the ultimate test, and discover how God always provides exactly what we need!"
Discussion Questions
- Fact 1: The First Computer! In the episode, you saw Isaac using a cool tool with sliding beads. That is called an abacus! It was an ancient counting tool. Isaac was trying to count all the stars in the sky because God promised his father, Abraham, that their family descendants would one day outnumber the stars!
- Fact 2: A Funny Name! Did you know that names in the Bible usually have a special meaning? God told Abraham and Sarah they would have a baby when Abraham was almost 100 years old! Sarah thought that was so crazy that she laughed. Because she laughed, God told them to name the baby "Isaac," which literally translates to "Laughter"!
- Fact 3: The Famous Mountain! God told Abraham to take his son to a very specific mountain in the land of Moriah to make the sacrifice. This wasn't just a random hill! Hundreds of years later, King Solomon would build the magnificent, famous Temple of God in Jerusalem on that exact same mountain (Mount Moriah)!
Active Game 1: "Ram in the Thicket" Relay
The Concept:
A fast-paced hide-and-seek relay to remind kids how God provides perfectly at the right time.
Instructions:
- Before class, hide several small stuffed animals or large cotton balls (representing the "rams") all around the room.
- Divide the class into two teams.
- When you say "Go!", one child from each team runs to find exactly one ram in the "thickets" (the room).
- Once they find one, they run back and tag the next teammate.
- The first team to find a specific number of rams (e.g., 5) wins!
The Lesson Tie-in:
Emphasize how happy Abraham was when he looked up and saw that God had provided exactly what he needed hidden in the bushes.
Active Game 2: "Isaac's Star Counters"
The Concept:
A counting game using an "abacus" style challenge.
Instructions:
- Dump a large pile of glow-in-the-dark stars, paper stars, or even just dry beans in the center of the room.
- Give each kid a cup. Set a timer for 30 seconds.
- Kids must race to pick up as many "stars" as they can, one at a time.
- Have them count their stars.
The Lesson Tie-in:
Remind them that God promised Abraham his family would be too big to count—and God always keeps His promises!
Easy Craft Time: "The Substitute Ram"
Materials:
Paper plates, cotton balls, glue, brown construction paper, googly eyes, and markers.
Instructions:
- Have the kids cover their paper plates in glue and stick cotton balls all over them to make a fluffy ram's body.
- Cut out two curved horns from the brown construction paper and glue them to the top.
- Add googly eyes and draw a face.
- Have them write "Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide" on the back.
The Lesson Tie-in:
Every time they look at this ram, they can remember that God provided the ram for Isaac, and Jesus for us!

For Lower Elementary (K-3):
- Keep it Sensory: Young kids love tactile experiences. Let them feel the soft cotton balls during craft time and explain that this is what a sheep feels like.
- Simplify the Signpost: Focus mainly on the fact that God saved Isaac. Explain that just like God put the ram in the bushes to keep Isaac safe, God sent Jesus to keep us safe from the punishment of sin.
- Keep the Focus Happy: The idea of sacrificing a child can be scary for 5-year-olds. Constantly remind them throughout the story that God never intended to let Isaac get hurt. It was just a test of Abraham's heart.
For Upper Elementary (4-6):
- Lean into the "Why": Older kids will ask, "Why would a loving God ask someone to kill their kid?" Address this head-on. Explain the concept of a Test (see Key Terms below). God didn't test Abraham because God didn't know what Abraham would do (God knows everything). God tested Abraham so that Abraham would know what his own faith was made of.
- Deeper Christ Connection: Have the older kids look for the parallels between Isaac and Jesus. Isaac carried his own wood; Jesus carried his own cross. Isaac was an "only, beloved son"; Jesus was God's only, beloved Son.
- Real-Life Application: Challenge them with Chris's storyline. Ask them how they handle it when they are asked to sacrifice their own desires (like their time, money, or a favorite toy) to help someone else in need.

Closing Prayer:
"Dear God, thank You that You are 'Jehovah Jireh', the God who provides. Thank You for loving us so much that You provided Jesus to be our ultimate substitute. When our faith is tested, please give us the courage and strength of Abraham to trust You completely. Amen."

Er nahm die Strafe für unsere Sünden auf sich, damit wir in Sicherheit sind und uns völlig vergeben werden können, so wie Isaak vom Widder gerettet wurde!“
Als Jugendleiter stoßen Sie beim Lesen von Studienbibeln oder bei der Vorbereitung auf diese Geschichte möglicherweise auf einige wichtige theologische Wörter. Для початкової школи (K-3):

- Глибший зв’язок із Христом: нехай старші діти знайдуть паралелі між Ісаком та Ісусом. Ісаак ніс свої дрова; Ісус ніс власний хрест. Ісаак був «єдиним, улюбленим сином»; Ісус був єдиним, улюбленим Сином Бога.
- Додаток у реальному житті: киньте їм виклик за сюжетом Кріса. Запитайте їх, як вони справляються з цим, коли їх просять пожертвувати власними бажаннями (наприклад, своїм часом, грошима чи улюбленою іграшкою), щоб допомогти комусь іншому, хто цього потребує.

- Заключна молитва: «Любий Боже, дякую Тобі, що Ти є «Єгова Ірі», Бог, який забезпечує. Дякую, що любиш нас так сильно, що дав Ісуса, щоб він став нашою остаточною заміною. Коли наша віра піддається випробуванню, будь ласка, дай нам мужність і силу Авраама, щоб повністю довіряти Тобі. Амінь».
