Genesis 1-3

In The Beginning

God created a perfect world because He loves us, and even when sin broke it, He immediately launched a rescue plan through Jesus.

The Unified Story (Context)

Where we are in the story: This is the very first page of God's big rescue story. Before any kings, before Moses, before the prophets—God created a beautiful family. This story sets up the problem (sin) that the rest of the entire Bible, and ultimately Jesus, is coming to fix.

Materials Needed

  • A small cardboard box with a lid (The "Do Not Touch" Box)
  • A piece of candy or small prize placed inside the box
  • Crayons and printouts of the Creation Coloring Sheet

Safe Language Guide

When talking about the serpent or the fall, keep it focused on the choice. Instead of focusing on scary imagery of the devil, emphasize that Sin is simply deciding we know better than God.

Teacher's Toolkit: Key Words

If these words come up in the video or the Bible reading, here is how to explain them simply to kids:

Sin: Choosing our way instead of God's way.
Grace: Getting a wonderful gift that you didn't earn.
Creator: Someone who makes something out of nothing.

1

What was the one rule God gave to Adam and Eve in the beautiful garden?

2

When Adam and Eve ate the fruit and hid, did God stop loving them? How do you know?

1

God could have made Adam and Eve like robots who were forced to obey Him. Why do you think He gave them a choice?

2

Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent. Why is it so hard for us to admit when we've done something wrong?

If a kid asks: "Who made God?"

Answer: "Everything in our world was made by someone. But God is different! God is outside of our world and outside of time. He has always existed. It's hard for our brains to imagine, but God is the beginning of everything!"

Hands-On: The "Do Not Touch" Box

1. Place the closed box in the center of the table before class starts.
2. Tell the kids: "You can play with anything in this room, but do not open this box."
3. After the video, ask them how it felt wanting to know what was inside. Use this physical feeling to explain the temptation Adam and Eve felt in the garden.
