The Last Supper
The Superbook-Inspired Lesson
Welcome back to the team! If you are feeling a little overwhelmed, take a deep breath—you are going to do an amazing job. You don’t need a theology degree to teach kids about Communion and what it means to truly serve others. Your most important job is simply to love these students and point them to Jesus. This guide is designed specifically for you to make teaching a breeze. It gives you the exact words to say, breaks down the tricky concepts into bite-sized pieces, and provides step-by-step instructions for a full hour of activities. You will also find an expanded "Key-Terms" glossary at the very end of this document to help you understand the deeper theology before you step into the classroom.
Before you begin, make sure to watch the video. It will help you know ahead of time what the kids will watch so that you can start preparing with the discussion questions, games, crafts, and more.
"Do you remember learning about the very first Passover back in Egypt? The Israelites had to sacrifice a perfect lamb and put its blood on their doorposts so the punishment would 'pass over' them.
When Jesus sat down at the Last Supper, He was celebrating that exact same Passover meal with His best friends. But Jesus changed the rules! He broke the bread and passed the cup, telling them that He was the new Passover Lamb.
Just like that first lamb in Egypt, Jesus's body was going to be broken, and His blood was going to be poured out on the cross to pay for our sins. Today, when Christians take Communion (eating the small piece of bread and drinking the juice), we are doing exactly what Jesus told His disciples to do: we are remembering the massive sacrifice the Lamb of God made to rescue us!".
As a youth leader, you might encounter some big theological words when reading commentaries or preparing for this story. You don't need to use these big words with the kids, but here is the complex theology broken down simply so you feel 100% confident in what you are teaching!

Teacher Script (3 to 4-Minute Intro): "Welcome, everyone! Have you ever wanted to be a superstar? Maybe a famous musician, an incredible athlete, or an internet celebrity? When people get famous, they sometimes start to act like they are better than everyone else, expecting people to wait on them hand and foot.
In today's Superbook adventure, Chris is dealing with a major attitude problem. His band has qualified to audition for the 'World's Best Band' show, and it has completely gone to his head! He is calling himself the 'King of Rock and Roll' and bossing Joy and Gizmo around like they are his personal servants. He thinks being great means everyone else has to serve him.
Before Chris ruins his friendships, Superbook whisks him, Joy, and Gizmo back in time to ancient Jerusalem! They arrive right as Jesus is riding into the city. Crowds of people are treating Jesus like a massive superstar, waving palm branches and shouting praises. But when Jesus gets alone with His disciples for a special meal, He does the exact opposite of what a famous king would do. Let's watch 'The Last Supper' and see Jesus show Chris what true greatness really looks like!".
Discussion Questions
- Fact 1: The Royal Donkey! When kings rode into a city after winning a war, they usually rode on massive, intimidating war horses (stallions). But Jesus chose to ride on a young donkey. Why? Because hundreds of years earlier, the prophet Zechariah promised that the true, peaceful King of Israel would arrive riding gently on a donkey!
- Fact 2: Really Dirty Feet! Back in the first century, the roads were covered in dirt, mud, and animal waste. Because everyone wore open sandals, their feet got absolutely filthy. Washing feet was considered the most disgusting job possible, reserved only for the lowest, least important slave in the household. When Jesus—the King of the universe—washed their feet, it completely shocked the disciples!.
- Fact 3: 30 Pieces of Silver! Judas secretly betrayed Jesus to the religious leaders for 30 pieces of silver. This wasn't just a random amount of money. In the ancient world, 30 pieces of silver was the exact legal price you would pay to buy a common slave. Judas sold out the Son of God for the price of a slave!.
Fact 4:
The Passover Meal! The "Last Supper" wasn't just a normal dinner; it was the Passover Feast. For 1,500 years, the Jewish people ate this specific meal to remember the night God rescued them from slavery in Egypt by the blood of a lamb. Jesus was using this ancient meal to show them that He was about to be the ultimate Lamb!.
Active Game 1: "The Servant Towel Relay"
- The Concept: A fun, team-building relay that emphasizes doing the "lowly" work of a servant to help a friend.
Instructions:
- Divide the kids into two teams.
- Give each team a medium-sized towel (like the one Jesus wrapped around His waist).
- Have one child sit on the towel on a smooth floor (tile or linoleum works best).
- On "Go!", their teammate must grab the edge of the towel and carefully pull their "master" across the room to the finish line, then switch places and pull them back.
- The first team to have everyone serve as the "towel puller" wins!
Serving others can be hard work, but Jesus calls us to put others first and serve them with joy!.
Active Game 2: "Palm Branch Praise"
- The Concept: A high-energy freeze-dance game celebrating Jesus's arrival as King.
Instructions:
- Hand out real palm branches, or have the kids quickly cut large leaves out of green construction paper.
- Play upbeat, joyful worship music.
- Have the kids wave their branches, jump, and shout "Hosanna!" just like the crowd in Jerusalem.
- When the music randomly stops, everyone must instantly freeze like a statue. Anyone who moves is out for that round!
Remind them that it's easy to praise Jesus when everyone else is doing it, but we need to follow Him even when the music stops and things get hard.
Easy Craft Time: "In Remembrance of Me" Cup & Bread
- Materials: Small paper plates, small plastic or paper cups, crayons/markers, purple tissue paper (for juice), and yellow/brown tissue paper (for bread), glue sticks.
Instructions:
- Have the kids glue the small cup to the center of their paper plate.
- Let them stuff a small piece of purple tissue paper inside the cup to represent the wine/juice.
- Have them crumple the yellow/brown tissue paper and glue it to the plate next to the cup to represent the broken bread.
- Around the edge of the paper plate, have them write Jesus's command: "Do this in remembrance of me.".
They can take this home to remind them of the ultimate price Jesus paid for their forgiveness.

For Lower Elementary (K-3):
- Keep it Sensory: Young kids love gross details! Really play up how smelly and muddy the disciples' feet were. Have them look at their own shoes and imagine having to wash the muddiest boots in the room.
- Simplify the Signpost: Keep the focus on the bread and the juice being "memory tools." Explain that just like a photograph helps us remember a fun vacation, Communion is a special meal that helps us remember how much Jesus loves us.
- Craft Emphasis: Spend extra time letting them glue the tissue paper "bread" and "juice" onto their plates. Tactile crafts help this age group remember the story long after they leave.
For Upper Elementary (4-6):
- Lean into the "Why": Pre-teens struggle with pride and social status at school. Discuss Chris's attitude. Ask them: "Why do we care so much about being 'popular' or the 'best'?" Challenge them with Jesus's words: If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all.
- Real-Life Application: Focus heavily on Judas. Explain that Judas hung out with Jesus every day, but his heart was still greedy for money and power. Challenge the older kids to examine their own hearts: are they following Jesus just because they want Him to do things for them, or are they willing to serve Him even when it costs them something?.
"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45).
- Closing Prayer: "Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to be our ultimate Servant King. Thank You for the bread and the cup that remind us of Your broken body and spilled blood. Please forgive us for the times we act selfishly or think we are better than others. Help us to have a humble heart and to love and serve the people around us this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.".
Family Discussion Prompts (For Parents):
- In the episode, Chris got a big head because he thought he was going to be a famous rock star. Why is it so easy for us to act selfishly when we feel important?
- Jesus washed the completely filthy feet of His disciples to show them how much He loved them. What is a "dirty job" or a chore you can do this week to serve someone in our family?
- The next time our church takes Communion, what are some specific things you can think about to remember Jesus's sacrifice for you?.

Als Jesus sich zum letzten Abendmahl setzte, feierte er genau dasselbe Pessachmahl mit seinen besten Freunden. Aber Jesus hat die Regeln geändert! Er brach das Brot, reichte den Kelch und sagte ihnen, dass er das neue Pessach-Lamm sei.
Genau wie das erste Lamm in Ägypten sollte der Körper Jesu zerbrochen und sein Blut am Kreuz vergossen werden, um für unsere Sünden zu bezahlen. Wenn Christen heute die Kommunion feiern (das kleine Stück Brot essen und den Saft trinken), tun wir genau das, was Jesus seinen Jüngern aufgetragen hat: Wir erinnern uns an das gewaltige Opfer, das das Lamm Gottes gebracht hat, um uns zu retten!“
Als Jugendleiter stoßen Sie beim Lesen von Kommentaren oder bei der Vorbereitung auf diese Geschichte möglicherweise auf einige wichtige theologische Wörter. Wenn Leute berühmt werden, fangen sie manchmal an, so zu tun, als wären sie besser als alle anderen, und erwarten, dass die Leute ihnen mit Händen und Füßen dienen.
Im heutigen Superbook-Abenteuer hat Chris mit einem großen Einstellungsproblem zu kämpfen. Seine Band hat sich für das Vorsingen für die „World's Best Band“-Show qualifiziert, und das ist ihm völlig zu Kopf gestiegen! Er nennt sich selbst den „King of Rock and Roll“ und kommandiert Joy und Gizmo herum, als wären sie seine persönlichen Diener. Diskussionsfragen
- Fakt 1: Der königliche Esel! Wenn Könige nach einem gewonnenen Krieg in eine Stadt ritten, ritten sie normalerweise auf riesigen, einschüchternden Kriegspferden (Hengsten). Doch Jesus entschied sich, auf einem jungen Esel zu reiten. Warum? Denn Hunderte Jahre zuvor versprach der Prophet Sacharja, dass der wahre, friedliche König Israels sanft auf einem Esel reiten würde!
- Fakt 2: Wirklich schmutzige Füße! Im ersten Jahrhundert waren die Straßen mit Schmutz, Schlamm und tierischen Abfällen bedeckt. Weil alle offene Sandalen trugen, wurden ihre Füße völlig dreckig. Das Waschen der Füße galt als die ekelhafteste Arbeit überhaupt und war nur dem niedrigsten und unbedeutendsten Sklaven im Haushalt vorbehalten. Als Jesus – der König des Universums – ihnen die Füße wusch, waren die Jünger völlig schockiert!
- Fakt 3: 30 Silberstücke! Judas verriet Jesus heimlich für 30 Silberstücke an die religiösen Führer. Dabei handelte es sich nicht nur um einen zufälligen Geldbetrag. In der Antike waren 30 Silberstücke der genaue gesetzliche Preis, den man für den Kauf eines gewöhnlichen Sklaven zahlen musste. Judas hat den Sohn Gottes für den Preis eines Sklaven verkauft!
- Fakt 4: Das Pessach-Essen! Das „Letzte Abendmahl“ war nicht nur ein normales Abendessen; es war das Pessachfest. 1.500 Jahre lang aß das jüdische Volk diese spezielle Mahlzeit, um sich an die Nacht zu erinnern, in der Gott es durch das Blut eines Lammes aus der Sklaverei in Ägypten befreite. Jesus nutzte dieses alte Mahl, um ihnen zu zeigen, dass er das ultimative Lamm sein würde!
- Aktives Spiel 1: „The Servant Towel Relay“
- Das Konzept: Eine unterhaltsame, teambildende Staffel, bei der es darum geht, die „niedere“ Arbeit eines Dieners zu erledigen, um einem Freund zu helfen.
Anweisungen:
- Teilen Sie die Kinder in zwei Teams auf.
- Geben Sie jedem Team ein mittelgroßes Handtuch (wie das, das Jesus um seine Taille gewickelt hat).

- Bei „Los!“ muss der Teamkollege den Rand des Handtuchs greifen und seinen „Meister“ vorsichtig durch den Raum bis zur Ziellinie ziehen, dann die Plätze tauschen und ihn zurückziehen.
- Das erste Team, bei dem alle als „Handtuchzieher“ fungieren, gewinnt!
- Die damit verbundene Lektion: Anderen zu dienen kann harte Arbeit sein, aber Jesus ruft uns dazu auf, andere an die erste Stelle zu setzen und ihnen mit Freude zu dienen!
- Aktives Spiel 2: „Palmenzweig loben“
- Das Konzept: Ein energiegeladenes Freeze-Dance-Spiel zur Feier der Ankunft Jesu als König.
Anweisungen:
- Verteilen Sie echte Palmenzweige oder lassen Sie die Kinder schnell große Blätter aus grünem Tonpapier ausschneiden.
- Spielen Sie fröhliche, fröhliche Anbetungsmusik.
- Lassen Sie die Kinder mit ihren Zweigen winken, springen und „Hosianna!“ rufen. genau wie die Menge in Jerusalem.

- Факт 2: Дійсно брудні ноги! Ще в першому столітті дороги були вкриті брудом, брудом і відходами тварин. Через те, що всі ходили в відкритих сандаліях, ноги в них зовсім забруднилися. Миття ніг вважалося найогиднішою роботою з усіх можливих, призначеною лише для найнижчого, найменш важливого раба в родині. Коли Ісус — Цар всесвіту — омив їм ноги, це вразило учнів!
- Факт 3: 30 срібних! Юда таємно зрадив Ісуса релігійним лідерам за 30 срібняків. Це була не просто випадкова сума грошей. У стародавньому світі 30 срібняків були точною законною ціною, яку ви заплатили б, щоб купити звичайного раба. Юда продав Сина Божого за ціну раба!.
- Факт 4: Пасха! «Таємна вечеря» була не просто звичайною вечерею; це було свято Пасхи. Протягом 1500 років єврейський народ їв цю особливу їжу, щоб згадати ніч, коли Бог врятував їх від рабства в Єгипті кров’ю ягняти. Ісус використовував цю давню їжу, щоб показати їм, що Він ось-ось стане справжнім Агнцем!
- Активна гра 1: «Естафета слуги рушником»
- Концепція: весела, командна естафета, яка наголошує на виконанні «низької» роботи слуги, щоб допомогти другові.
Інструкції:
- Розділіть дітей на дві команди.
- Дайте кожній команді рушник середнього розміру (як той, який Ісус обгорнув навколо талії).
- Нехай одна дитина сяде на рушник на гладку підлогу (найкраще підійде плитка або лінолеум).
- На «Вперед!» їхній товариш по команді повинен схопити край рушника й обережно потягнути «господаря» через кімнату до фінішу, потім помінятися місцями й відтягнути їх назад.
- Виграє команда, яка першою запропонує всім виконувати функції «витягувачів рушників»!
- Пов’язка уроку: служіння іншим може бути важкою роботою, але Ісус закликає нас ставити інших на перше місце і служити їм із радістю!.
- Активна гра 2: «Похвала пальмової гілки»
- Концепція: енергійна гра з танцем-заморожуванням, яка святкує прихід Ісуса як Царя.
Інструкції:
- Роздайте справжні пальмові гілки або попросіть дітей швидко вирізати великі листки із зеленого будівельного паперу.
- Слухайте бадьору, радісну музику для поклоніння.
- Нехай діти махають гілками, стрибають і кричать «Осанна!» так само, як натовп в Єрусалимі.
- Коли музика випадково зупиняється, кожен повинен миттєво завмерти, як статуя. Будь-хто, хто рухається, виходить у цей раунд!

- Прив’язка до уроку: вони можуть взяти це додому, щоб нагадати їм про найвищу ціну, яку Ісус заплатив за їхнє прощення.

Для початкової школи (K-3):

- Акцент на творчості: Витратьте додатковий час, дозволяючи їм приклеювати цигарковий папір «хліб» і «сік» на свої тарілки. Тактильні ремесла допомагають цій віковій групі запам’ятовувати історію ще довго після того, як вони підуть.
Для початкової школи (4-6):
- Зверніть увагу на питання «Чому»: підлітки борються з гордістю та соціальним статусом у школі. Обговоріть ставлення Кріса. Запитайте їх: «Чому ми так дбаємо про те, щоб бути «популярними» чи «найкращими»?» Киньте їм виклик словами Ісуса: «Якщо хочеш бути великим, ти повинен бути всім слугою».
- Застосування в реальному житті: зосередьтеся на Юді. Поясніть, що Юда щодня спілкувався з Ісусом, але його серце все ще було жадібним до грошей і влади. Запропонуйте старшим дітям перевірити власні серця: чи йдуть вони за Ісусом лише тому, що хочуть, щоб Він щось зробив для них, чи вони готові служити Йому, навіть коли це їм коштує чогось?.
Вірш для запам’ятовування:
«Адже й Син Людський не прийшов, щоб служили Йому, але щоби послужити і душу Свою віддати як викуп за багатьох!». (Марка 10:45).
- Заключна молитва: «Дорогий Боже, дякуємо Тобі за те, що послав Ісуса бути нашим остаточним Царем-Слугою. Дякуємо Тобі за хліб і чашу, які нагадують нам про Твоє розбите тіло та пролиту кров. Будь ласка, прости нам за часи, коли ми діємо егоїстично або вважаємо себе кращими за інших. Допоможи нам мати смиренне серце, любити людей навколо нас і служити їм цього тижня. В ім’я Ісуса, амінь».

- У епізоді Кріс отримав велику голову, тому що думав, що стане відомою рок-зіркою. Чому нам так легко поводитися егоїстично, коли ми відчуваємо себе важливими?
- Ісус омив абсолютно брудні ноги Своїх учнів, щоб показати їм, як сильно Він любить їх. Яку «брудну роботу» або домашню роботу ви можете зробити цього тижня, щоб служити комусь із членів нашої сім’ї?
- Наступного разу, коли наша церква прийме Причастя, про які конкретні речі ви можете подумати, щоб згадати жертву Ісуса за вас?
